Kindergarten tears

Caelin and I finished the My Father's World kindergarten curriculum today. When we finished her last item and she had closed her notebook, the tears started to flow down her cheeks. Looking at my beautiful daughter crying because she enjoyed school so much this year that she was sad to see it end, my mama heart just melted. I am so thankful that she loves learning and loved the means we used this year.

Finding that perfect curriculum is a scavenger hunt. Sadly, it took me 6 years of searching to find one that both my children and I like. I refuse, however, to give in to the guilt that nags at me. You know those little questions like "Why didn't I find this curriculum sooner to use with the older ones?" and "Have I scarred my children for life because we used something different when they were in kindergarten?"

I can wish that I had used My Father's World for the older three small people when they were in kindergarten, but that doesn't change anything. Instead, I will choose to look at this as a journey. Along the way we've had some speed bumps and potholes, but we've also seen some wonderful scenery. We've made incredible memories as we've explored using what the Lord led me to use each year. Jeannie Fulbright said something last weekend at the homeschool conference that continues to resonate in my ears, "Keep your focus on God's purposes, not on your purposes." He knows what my children and I have needed each year as we've navigated through school and life. I thank Him and praise Him for helping me with my curriculum decisions each year, for bringing me to My Father's World this past school year, and for teaching me to be content with the path we have taken.

Oh, and by no means have I finished my school year in March. (Technically, I still have 9 days until I've hit my state-mandated 180 days for this year). We still have other things we want to do, read, and explore. And the bigger small people have a few weeks left in our Exploring Countries and Cultures to finish.

  1. I needed to read this post today. Homeschooling can open you up to levels of guilt, regret and hand-wringing like nothing else.

I once told a girlfriend, "We should have been researching curriculum and teaching methods since the womb."

"I have", she told me, "I started when I was pregnant with my first."

"No, I meant... When you and I were in *our* mother's wombs."

I'm so happy that you found what works for you, and for that precious baby. And it's awesome to see you praise God for all of it, for what you were given in each season.

  4. I feel the same way about MFW K - that I wish I'd used it with my older girls, too. But they're fine - and I'm glad I found it now. I have five more weeks left before we finish. I wonder if my little bug will cry, too. :^)

  5. That is so exciting when you find that curriculum that just works for you! We feel the same way about Heart of Dakota, yet I've heard SO many wonderful things about MFW as well! :) Congratulations on getting through the K level... enjoy your next months of fun!

  6. I have always thought of trying MFW, but that's one we haven't tried yet..We have always wandered from curriculum to curriculum, year to year, trying to find the best fit for each learning style at the right time in their growth. Glad you found the right fit for your children, and you described finding the right one perfectly. Definitely a scavenger hunt! Stopping by from The Hip Homeschool Hop!

  7. Great post!! Curriculum to fit the kids is always hard to find. I have a hodge podge curriculum for us and feel we have finally found a groove. I do have some of My Father's World mixed into everything and we do love it too!

So sweet when they love learning something so much they don't want it to end. That is totally awesome!

    Take care!

  10. So great that she loves the program so much! I think it takes many of us years to find something that is a perfect fit. Thanks for sharing your journey!

  11. So glad I found time to come back and "visit" longer. This post is EXACTLY what I needed to read. I have been praying and searching for what to use with my 4 yr next fall. I am usually more unstructured for that age but he wants to do "real schoolwork" and even though he will be the fifth kid I've homeschooled, I really wasn't 100% thrilled with what I've used in the past and have been leaning towards using MFW. You helped make my decision :)
